You Can’t Fake A False Turn - Part 2

Need to change the dog’s line a specific amount? Afraid a reverse spin will turn your dog too much or not enough? The False Turn could be the answer! Read the tips for executing the False Turn by OneMind Dogs Assistant Coach Katelyn Scott.

This is the second part of a series of two blog posts. You can read the first post here.

Katelyn says: "The False Turn is a technique which can be used in a wide variety of places. Commonly referred to as the Front Cross you changed your mind on, it requires the handler to push towards the take-off of the obstacle and begin to rotate before the dog takes-off. This is a very versatile technique which can be used for much more than just pull thrus!

Benefits of the False Turn:

  • Handler only needs to turn towards the dog’s take-off. Handlers that struggle to spin in the course could consider a False Turn instead.
  • Handlers are able to keep their eyes on the dog the entire time. This means you can get many different degrees of turn using the same technique.
  • Versatile places to use! – Threadles, turning the dog to the correct end of the tunnel, slight changes to the line in the middle of the course, starting a Lap Turn, starting a Tandem Turn!

The reality of the False Turn is that while at first it feels weird to move backwards, the more times you use it the more you see fun places to use it! "
