Lesson 5: Calming Down

Many dogs get so excited about agility that instead of motivating them, we will need to teach them to calm down.

When a dog is too frantic he will get tired during a long competition day. He won't be able to concentrate on his tasks such as jumping or performing contact obstacles correctly. A tired dog is also more likely to get injured.

Calming down exercises teach your dog to handle his drive, to concentrate better and save his energy during training and long competition days. Watch the video and learn more!

Try this exercise: Get your dog excited with a toy, “steal” the toy, wait calmly (with the dog on a leash) for him to relax, and start to play again right after relaxing. With this exercise, your dog learns to offer relaxation to get something fun to happen. He also learns to control his state of mind, from excited to relaxed.
