Lesson 3: Calm or Rough? Getting To Know Your Dog

Before starting basic agility exercises with puppies, we at OneMind Dogs carry out the same socialization training that every dog should have, no matter what hobby or dog sport they will head towards in the future.

Because we aim for high level agility competitions with our dogs, we also get our puppies used to traveling, different surfaces and all kind of sounds.

The most important thing from day one together, however, is building a relationship with the puppy. This means getting to know the new family member, finding out what kind of toys he likes, does he want to play gently or rough, what are his favorite treats, does he like to be petted or does he need his space, is there something he is afraid of, which activities he likes the most, and so on. Once you know what your dog likes, you have the tools for motivating and rewarding your dog.

We also follow the dog’s temperament closely. If the dog has a lot of drive and gets overexcited easily, we do some calming exercises and teach the dog to be able to control his state of mind.

The next two lessons will give you a better idea about teaching your dog to play and calm down.

Our mission is to give a happy life to dogs by helping people become amazing dog owners. We are passionate about increasing the mutual understanding between the dog and the owner, making a life together more enjoyable for both.
